Finding Belle Vue

September 4, 2023|The beginning..

Our journey to find Belle Vue Cottage began in the winter of 2022 after my husband Mike and I were drawn to Newfoundland while watching the HGTV show "Rock Solid Builds". We found that when watching the show we were drawn into the vibrancy of the towns and ruggedness of the landscape. We have both visited the East Coast in the past and found the smell of the salty ocean air, fresh seafood and the endless amount of exploration through trails and back roads pulled us in and allowed us to relax.

We began looking in January after we found a beautifully renovated biscuit box, we reached out to the realtor that had the home listed. Unfortunately we learned that house had already been sold so let the search begin! We really had no idea what we were looking for but did know that we wanted this home to play into our future, a place that our children could enjoy. The home had to be special.

Through our search we entrusted our realtor to show the homes through Facetime as this process began while there will still COVID restrictions in place, therefore we couldn't be on the ground searching with him. We virtually toured numerous homes but none of them pulled us in like this home did.

Thankfully we had already planned a home that our realtor had scheduled to show us in Upper Island Cove when he noticed that this home was coming to market. We were able to get into see the home that afternoon and we fell in love. Our realtor mentioned that this may be the house we were looking for - however we had no idea what we were looking for.

We submitted an offer on the home and closed just 2 months later in March. Our first trip to see the home happened a few weeks later in April. I can still remember the nervousness and excitement of finally seeing the house we bought virtually a few months ago - We were scared at the same time - what if the house is not what we expect? What if this experience was not what we had thought it was?

Then we came over the crest of the hill on "Long Hill Road" and our breath was taken away, the view was absolutely incredible.

And then we saw the house...

We pulled into the driveway and were immediately drawn to the back yard, the back deck and the view.

Even in the month of April the view was endless, the water was refreshing, we could see for miles. We stood there and soaked it all in.

So far what we had seen was more than what we expected. The house was standing tall and the view took our breath away, now it was time to go inside - what could that experience bring??

We opened the front door and immediately felt at home. The bright sunshine pouring in through the back windows lit up the large living space, the beautiful wood floors as it draws you into the home.

The house was renovated in 2012 with new floors, an updated kitchen with appliances, crown molding and new windows and doors. We also had the house painted to brighten up the rooms. The home has 4 bedrooms and two updated bathrooms. The space feels large enough to sleep up to 8 people with Queen beds in each room or cozy enough for 2 people to enjoy the warm fireplace.

We fell in love immediately.

We affectionately named our new home Belle Vue Cottage because of its beautiful expansive view of the town below and Conception Bay. Our past guests rave about the view! The sunrises, full moon, rainbows, waves crashing and the whales playing are all set on stage for you to view from the back deck or fire pit.

Our hope is when you visit with your friends and family that you all feel the overwhelming sense of relaxation and joy from the interior of the home right out to the breathtaking view.

If you haven't experienced Belle Vue Cottage just yet, what are you waiting for?? Our home can offer year round views and relaxation. Why not check the calendar to see if your dates are available for booking!

Renovating Belle Vue Cottage

September 13, 2023|The beginning..

renovations at Belle Vue Cottage, painting family living room

Renovating a cottage can be a labor of love, especially when the goal is to transform it into a warm and inviting space for guests. Belle Vue Cottage, nestled in Upper Island Cove Newfoundland, underwent a small renovation project when we purchased the property with the aim of creating a cozy retreat that seamlessly blends comfort, local artistry, and all the conveniences of home.

In this blog post, we will take you on a journey through the renovation process, highlighting the key elements that turned Belle Vue Cottage into a haven for visitors seeking a memorable getaway.

1. Embracing Natural Light: To create an inviting and bright ambiance, the renovation sought to maximize the flow of natural light throughout the cottage. Brightly painted walls and light-colored linens were chosen to allow the space to be bathed in natural light during the day.

2. Cozy Linens and Soft Furnishings: One of the main objectives was to provide guests with a comfortable and relaxing environment. Luxurious linens, plush pillows, and cozy blankets were carefully selected to ensure a restful night's sleep. Layers of textures and soft furnishings, such as rugs and throw pillows, were incorporated to add warmth and a sense of coziness to the cottage.

3. Local Art and Artisans: Highlighting the charm and character of the region, local art played a significant role in the renovation. The walls of Belle Vue Cottage now proudly showcase works from talented local artists, capturing the essence of the community and creating a unique and engaging atmosphere.

4. Thoughtful Attention to Details: The devil is in the details, and in the case of Belle Vue Cottage, no detail was overlooked. The renovation project paid particular attention to small touches that make a big difference. Handpicked books, board games, and a well-curated selection of magazines were made available to guests, ensuring they can unwind and enjoy their leisure time to the fullest. Thoughtful amenities such as fresh flowers, scented candles, and a selection of local teas are also provided to create a welcoming and personal touch.

5. Modern Comforts: While retaining the cottage's traditional charm, modern comforts were integrated to enhance the guest experience. Upgraded kitchen appliances, high-speed internet access, and a entertainment system were seamlessly incorporated into the cottage's design. These additions allow guests to enjoy the convenience of modern living while immersing themselves in the rustic beauty of their surroundings.

The renovation of Belle Vue Cottage successfully transformed it into a bright and welcoming home for guests. By embracing natural light, incorporating cozy linens and soft furnishings, showcasing local art, and providing all the comforts of home, the cottage now offers a memorable and enchanting experience for visitors. Whether it's a romantic weekend getaway or a family retreat, Belle Vue Cottage is ready to provide a haven of comfort, relaxation, and a true taste of the local community's charm.

Barrett's Bakery - History of Belle Vue

October 1, 2023|The beginning..

During our family visit this summer, we were honoured to be shown a piece of Belle Vue’s history by our lovely neighbours, Pat and Christine.

For many years Belle Vue was Barrett’s Bakery named after the owners, Dave and Blanche Barrett. The bakery operated between 1988 to when it closed in 2006.
Prior to the bakery, the owners ran a grocery store and a Golden Eagle/Ultramar which included gas pumps where the front garden is now, along with parking.
This store served the residents that lived in the area and the children at the time, played around the store and gas pumps. These children who are now adults and the community have such fond memories of this store and their owners.

The front portion of the house including the kitchen and bedrooms served as their store front and bakery while the back area of living room and master bedroom/ensuite were a recent addition to the home constructed during upgrades in 2012.

We are pleased to own such a special piece of the community’s history!

The Griffersons: A Blended Family's Newfoundland Adventure

October 26, 2023|Our Family

Meet the Griffersons, we are a lively and loving blended family of seven, whose hearts are deeply intertwined with the rugged beauty and rich culture of Newfoundland. Last July, we embarked on a remarkable journey to share our passion for this enchanting Canadian province with our children.

A Family United

The Griffersons are not your typical family, and we wouldn't have it any other way. With diverse backgrounds and unique stories, we've come together to create a tapestry of love and togetherness. Our shared love for Newfoundland serves as a powerful bond that weaves our hearts together.

Immersed in Culture

For our family, Newfoundland is more than a place; it's a way of life. We wanted to share this love with our children, so we packed our bags and headed for the island in July, this past summer. Our adventure began with the annual spectacle of capelin rolling onto the shores, a mesmerizing natural event that left their kids in awe of the wonders of nature.

Exploring the Great Outdoors

Hiking along the rugged coastline, our children discovered the true essence of Newfoundland. They marveled at the towering cliffs, the crashing waves, and the stunning vistas that surrounded them. It was a chance to appreciate the raw beauty of the island and create lasting memories.

Berry-Picking Adventures

One of the highlights of our trip was picking wild blueberries. With baskets in hand, they scoured the countryside, filling their containers with the tiny, sweet treasures. It was a hands-on lesson in Newfoundland's connection to the land and its bountiful offerings.

Sharing the Magic

The Griffersons' trip to Newfoundland was not just about exploring a place; it was about sharing our passion and instilling in our children a deep appreciation for the province's culture, nature, and traditions. It was a journey that strengthened our family bonds and created lifelong memories.

In the end, our family returned home with our hearts full of love for Newfoundland, knowing that we had passed on a precious gift to our children – the magic of a place where the land and its people are intertwined in a timeless dance. Our Newfoundland adventure was not just a vacation; it was a life-changing experience that will continue to shape our family's story for generations to come.

Discovering Ancient Wonders: Fossil Expedition Chronicles

February 18, 2024|Travel

Hello from Adrienne and Mike at Belle Vue Cottage, your cozy retreat in the heart of Upper Island Cove! As we celebrate Newfoundland's rich geological treasures, we're excited to share the extraordinary journey led by Memorial University's Christopher McKean and his team, right here in our beloved Conception Bay North.

Nestled on the shores just a stone's throw away from Belle Vue Cottage, Upper Island Cove has emerged as a hidden gem in the province's fossil landscape. Over the past few years, McKean, a PhD candidate, and his team have been unraveling mysteries that date back over half a billion years.

Newfoundland, often hailed as a "geologist's playground," showcases its uniqueness through fossils that mark the discovery of the first complex creatures globally. At Belle Vue Cottage, we're thrilled to be at the doorstep of this scientific marvel, where Ediacaran biota fossils challenge classification, leaving us wondering about their true origins.

Unlike traditional fossils, these ancient imprints cannot be studied in a lab, so McKean and his team utilize silicone casts to unlock the secrets hidden within the rocks. Join us as we dive into the significance of this research, extending beyond scientific curiosity to play a crucial role in understanding the evolution of life and Earth's history.

As we explore the geological wonders of Upper Island Cove, we invite you to consider the unique positioning of Newfoundland during the Ediacaran era—south of the equator, just off the coast of Avalonia, named after our very own Avalon Peninsula.

Comparing the fossils found here with those at Mistaken Point, McKean notes intriguing differences in age and preservation, creating a captivating narrative that adds to the allure of our local landscape.

Working closely with the community, McKean's findings have ignited a sense of pride among the locals in Upper Island Cove. As stewards of this ancient legacy, they cherish their connection to the fossils, sharing stories of barbecues on the rocks and wedding photos taken against this historical backdrop.

At Belle Vue Cottage, we revel in being a part of this unique community that proudly embraces its geological heritage. As McKean and his team strive to preserve the site for future generations, we join them in their efforts, ensuring that the magic of Upper Island Cove continues to captivate visitors for years to come.

So, whether you're sipping hot cocoa by the fireplace or exploring the rugged beauty of Upper Island Cove, let Belle Vue Cottage be your home away from home as you uncover the ancient wonders that lie just beyond our doorstep.
